Fasted blood samples were collected via venepuncture. Whole blood was collected in EDTA tubes for HbA1c analysis. Serum samples were processed locally for vitamin D and metabolomics analyses. Plasma and buffy coat fractions were aliquoted for insulin measurement and DNA extraction. Blood collected in PAXgene tubes was processed for subsequent mRNA extraction.

TKR-S (Knee replacement - standard care): Patients recovering from elective knee replacement receiving standard postoperative care. This population was assessed at the Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands.
